Redesigning the clinical screens so staff spend less time searching and more time with the patient

Alveolar is a dental patient management platform used by clinics to track patient records, visits, and treatments. The product had the right features, but they were scattered across disconnected screens. Clinical staff lost context mid-task and repeated work that should have taken seconds.

My Role

Designing within an established platform

I joined with existing research, early wireframes, and an established product structure already in place. My job was interaction design, visual design, and developer handoff for the clinical workflows in scope: Visit Flow, Documents, Membership, Patient Notes, and mobile communication, including several screens that had no wireframe to start from.

Key Decisions

Three interface decisions where a small change in interaction, layout or ownership made a clinical task noticeably easier to complete.

Making the Treatment Plan addition visible

ProblemAdding a treatment entry updated the list too subtly, so nothing confirmed the action had worked.
DecisionMoved the action closer to the result and added downward motion when a new entry lands.
WhyStaff shouldn't have to double-check whether something saved.

Reducing input friction in Prescription

ProblemRadio buttons and a visual gap between duration and quantity implied unrelated fields.
DecisionA switch replaced the radio buttons, icons replaced day/noon/night text, and duration and quantity moved together.
WhyPrescriptions are written between patients, so fewer decisions per field means less time per prescription.

Owning Documents without a wireframe

ProblemNo wireframe existed, so the risk was defaulting to a generic file-list pattern.
DecisionSorting, filtering by visit or type, folders and upload all live at the same level, with nothing nested.
WhyStaff need to move between file types fast, not follow a fixed path.

Outcome

Alveolar hasn't shipped yet, so this is intended impact, not measured results. Each decision targeted a specific friction the original research flagged: unclear system feedback, slow prescription entry, and buried patient files.

Confirmable actionsTreatment Plan changes are visible the moment they happen, so staff don't need to double-check whether something saved.
Faster prescriptionsFewer decisions per field should mean less time spent writing a prescription between patients.
Faster access to filesSorting and filtering documents as first-level actions should shorten the time spent finding a specific file mid-conversation with a patient.

Feedback has to match the size of the action. A system-state change needs a system-state-sized signal, not a subtle color shift.
